Over the past 12 years I have led numerous projects and teams, tackling design problems at a global scale. I started out as an independent design consultant, and for the past 8 years I have been working at Amazon as a UX Designer and Design Manager. Below is a brief overview of a few projects that I have had the opportunity to be a part of.
Amazon Delivery Service Partner (DSP) Portal
In June of 2018 Amazon launched the Delivery Service Partner (DSP) Program, which enables entrepreneurs to build small to medium sized delivery companies to deliver packages for Amazon. I led the design strategy, product vision, and UX team responsible for the suite of software products that power the DSP Program. Today, the DSP Program is the backbone of Amazon’s global last mile network, which has grown into one of the largest delivery operations in the world.

Amazon Logistics Platform
Amazon Logistics is Amazon's in-house transportation network that delivers items to customers around the world. Beginning in 2013, I led the strategy and design of the Amazon Logistics Platform – the software tools that have helped the program scale from just a few deliveries per day, to become one of the world’s largest transportation networks. The suite of software applications, is used by internal users for delivery station operations, capacity planning, and on-road delivery support. The platform also supports customer-facing programs like Amazon locker, pickup points and order tracking on Amazon.com.

Amazon Delivery App
Amazon’s last mile deliveries depend on a driver app, used by drivers all around the world. I led the design of the core delivery app, called the Driver On-Road Assistant (DORA). DORA was used for all deliveries from 2013 to 2015. In 2015 we re-designed the driver app and added new features to support the crowd-sourced delivery program, Amazon Flex. I led the design of key features for Amazon Flex, including Onboarding, Scheduling, and Account Management.

Ximedica emergency room redesign
In 2008 I was part of a team contracted by Ximedica, a Rhode Island medical device company, to re-imagine the emergency department “resuscitation bay” of a level-one trauma center. Over the course of 5 weeks we conducted more than 150 hours of contextual observation to determine usability barriers – looking at physical ergonomics as well as cognitive and organization ergonomics with a goal to better optimize this environment.
We focused on the complex challenges faced by doctors and nurses during life-saving medical interventions including: the physical layout of the room, organization of supplies, and 360 degree access to the patient. Through the design process we identified key opportunities to reduce congestion, layout supplies in more efficient ways and design changes to commonly used equipment to make them more efficient. The full-scale prototype of the fully re-imagined “Smart Bay“ of the future was used to build strategic partnerships with device manufactures and hospital administrators.

Altair Fuels and Targeted Growth
From 2009-2012 I worked as an independent design consultant for a range of customers including several biotech startups. I helped the scientists distill complex biotechnology concepts into simple presentations, websites and diagrams that were used to raise millions in startup capital and land key partnerships with commercial airlines and the US Defense Department. I led the brand development and launch of a biofuel company called AltAir Fuels that built a commercial-scale 63-acre biofuel refinery capable of producing 45 million gallons of renewable jet fuel per year.

Blue Knives
In 2009 I founded a company making handmade kitchen knives. I worked with knife makers and chefs to develop the product and production process from the ground up. Blue Knives sold knives to professional and amateur chefs around the United States, providing a level of personalization and attention to detail that is not possible at a production scale. This was a great experience, teaching me the fundamentals of business and product development, but I ultimately realized my passion is for user-centered design and in 2012 I stopped taking orders for Blue Knives.
